Yom Ha Zikaron is a Memorial Day for soldiers who lost their lives fighting in the War of Independence and in subsequent battles. As on Yom HaShoah, an air raid siren is played twice. There is a national ceremony at the military cemetery on Mt. Herzl, where many of Israeli leaders and soldiers are buried.

Yom Ha-Atzmaut in Israel is always preceded by Yom Hazikaron — Memorial Day for the Fallen Soldiers. The message of linking these two days is clear: Israelis owe their independence- the very existence of the state - to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for it. David Ben-Gurion, who was the first prime minister of Israel, publicly read the Declaration of Independence of Israel on May 14, 1948. According to the Jewish calendar, this was the fifth day of Iyar, the eighth month of the civil year, in the year 5708.
